What type of training is required?

Q.  What type of training is required?
A.  When a Girl Scout troop/group is planning on sleeping or cooking in the out of doors a registered Girl Scout adult must take Outdoor Adventure training offered by the council.  It is highly recommended to take the training even if the troop/group only plans on renting a building.  The training provides additional resources for enhancing troop activities.

Q. How many people can sleep in each building and what are the sleeping arrangements?
A. Buildings sleep up to 25 on mattresses arranged on the floor.  Crystal Lake House, The Cedars, Gemini I has small room available that sleeps two in twin beds.  Tent units sleep capacity ranges 32-62 in tents and tent cabins on cots.

Q: What time is check-in and check-out?
A: Check-in: 4:00 p.m.  Check-out: 3:00 p.m.

Q. How do get the keys to unlock the building I have reserved?
A. If you are staying in any of the buildings at Camp Evelyn including Crystal Lake house the building will be opened for you prior to you coming.  If you are staying at Camp Manitou keys will be mailed to you prior to you coming.

Q.  Are the kitchens stocked and with what?
A.  Kitchens include refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffee pot, cooking utensils, pots and pans, plates, cups, and silverware for up to 25 people.  There are no electric griddles or electric frying pans in the buildings.

Q. What equipment do you suggest I bring along when renting one of the buildings?
A.  Bring your own dish clothes and dish towels, and any type of plastic wrap and paper products desired.

Q.  Do the buildings have toilets and showers?
A.  Each building with the exception of Tent Units and the Lodge have minimum of two toilets and at least one shower.  Individuals should bring along their own shower towel.

Q.  Is there a TV and/or DVD player or radio in the buildings?
A. No there are TV’s, DVD players, or radios available in any of the buildings

Q: Do we need to bring fans with us?
A: Yes, it is advisable to bring fans in the warmer months.

Q. Is there a grill?
A. There are no grills available at buildings however there are campfire bowls which allow for cooking and grates are available for this use.

Q.  Is there a tripod to go over the fire?
A.  There are grates that fit over a fire that can be used to cook on.

Q. Do you have Dutch Ovens, roasting forks, or pudgy pie irons for the fire?
A. Yes Dutch Ovens, roasting forks and pudgy pie irons are available however you will need to request these items when making your reservation.

Q.  Are there lawn chairs or what is there to sit on around the fire pit?
A.  Fire bowls provide benches to sit upon in main campfire bowl at Camp Evelyn, at Crystal Lake House, The Cedars and the Pine Troop House; no lawn chairs are available at any of the building sites.

Q. I know there is a fireplace or fire bowl ring are we required to bring our own firewood and kindling?
A. Firewood is provided for at each building you will need to collect kindling to build a fire.

Q.  Are lifeguards required to go swimming or do other waterfront activities when renting a camp facility?
A. Troops must follow Safety Activity Checkpoints including having certified lifeguards on duty for all swimming and water activities.  Troops wishing to utilize the waterfront area, and equipment while at our camp facilities should contact the Director of Camps and Program at the Girl Scout Center at least three weeks prior to their reservation date to determine fees and availability of  lifeguards.   The Roenitz Family Pool at Camp Evelyn and the seasonal staff lifeguards are available to troops renting the Crystal Lake House during the summer camp season for a fee. 

Groups renting our camp facilities who are not Girl Scout members who wish to utilize the waterfront area, and equipment should contact the Director of Camps and Program at the Girl Scout Center at least three weeks prior to their reservation date to determine fees and availability of lifeguards.  All groups are required to have certified lifeguards on duty for all swimming and water activities.  The Roenitz Family Pool at Camp Evelyn and the seasonal staff lifeguards are available to groups renting the Crystal Lake House during the summer camp season for a fee.

Q: When my troop rents a building can we swim in the pool, go boating, shop in the canteen?
A: During the summer months your troop may add on a swim session to any Crystal Lake House rental, and you may contact the camp to schedule a time to visit the canteen.  Other activities should be planned by the troop; there may be resources available for your use.

Q: If we rent the Crystal Lake House in the summer, can our troop join in on your resident camp activities?
A: Unfortunately, the activities that are happening at Camp Evelyn are for resident campers only. If your troop is interested in these activities it is suggested the troop register and join us for a Troop Camp session!

Q: Is there any poison ivy in the area around camp?
A: Yes, poison ivy has been known to grow in various areas of camp, please advise everyone to stay on trails.

Q: Are there any hiking trails?
A: There are many trails in camp to explore, many lead to the various campsites, one leads to Lookout Mountain, others lead to the river, and some are mainly scenic trails in the woods.

Q: How early do I need to make my reservation on order to insure a good date?
A: You may make your reservation as early as you would like.  Both Camp Evelyn and Camp Manitou are popular troop adventures.

Q. My troop has adults and/or children coming with our Girl Scout troop that are not registered Girl Scout members is there extra insurance I should purchase in order for them to be a part of the troop for the day or weekend?
A.  Girl Scout groups/troops who have non-registered participants attending a camp outing are required to purchase extra insurance.  Follow procedures in the link provided to purchase the extra insurance.
