The camp staff are committed to creating a supportive and nurturing environment for the campers who attend Camp Evelyn or Camp Manitou. Although many are studying or working in related fields such as education, psychology, sociology, recreation, social work, and more, they are chosen primarily for their keen interest and ability to work with children in a camp setting.
To prepare for the summer, staff go through background checks, an interview process, and take part in an intensive 12-day pre-camp training period that covers various topics that include, but is not limited to, emergency procedures, CPR/First Aid/AED/Lifeguarding, waterfront safety, homesickness, and more.
Below are a few camp staff that cannot wait to see you this summer!
Director of Camp and Program
Dory will be celebrating her eighth year at Camp Evelyn this summer! As the Director of Camp and Program, most of Dory’s work is behind the scenes making sure everyone is having fun and camp is running smoothly. Dory’s combined childhood experiences as a Girl Scout and recent experience as a Camp Evelyn staff member have led her to the strong belief that every girl deserves a chance to camp. Dory holds a bachelor’s degree in resort management from Lakeland College and has completed an Emergency Medical Responder course. She continuously participates in workshops and other learning opportunities to ensure that she is up to date on the latest camp information. In Dory’s spare time, she enjoys playing soccer, fishing, going to garage sales, visiting museums, and spending time with her family. What Dory likes most about Camp Evelyn is watching girls come back each year and seeing all of the great friendships that are made.
Spark will be celebrating his 21st year with the Girl Scouts of Manitou Council this summer. He started out as a part-time caretaker of Camp Manitou for eight years. When his dream job of full-time Property Manager at Camp Evelyn opened up in 2002, he quit his full-time job in Manitowoc and moved to Camp Evelyn with his family. Spark pretty much single-handedly takes care of Camp Evelyn, except for some help in the summer time, to make sure camp is safe and always in good working order for everyone. Spark holds certifications in OSHA, ANSI and ISO. His specialties are trail-building, invasive plant management, and pool maintenance. He knows Camp Evelyn like the back of his hand! When Spark isn’t working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Linda, his three adult children, and seven grandchildren. Spark’s favorite thing about Camp Evelyn is its incredible natural beauty.
