Indigenous Skies Presentation - Manitou Council Astronomy Club Event
The Manitou Council Girl Scout Astronomy Club would like to invite Girl Scouts in grades 7-12 to join us on Saturday, January 30, from 11:00 - 12:00 pm for “Indigenous Voices: Sharing the Wisconsin Sky.”
Dr. Jean Creighton, the Director of the UW-Milwaukee Manfred Olson Planetarium, will be doing a special presentation via Zoom just for the astronomy club and Manitou Council Girl Scouts. It will be based on a previous series of programs for which her undergraduate students worked to preserve the languages (in some cases endangered) of six Wisconsin nations, saving the words for different astronomical objects including the Sun and the stars and Milky Way, and also the distinct way that each nation looks at the night sky. She will be sharing some of the rare constellation stories that were collected as well.
*Space is limited, for more information please contact Becky Gretz at email@example.com and include the number of girls (and leaders) that would like to attend.
Manitou Council Girl Scouts grades 9-12 that are interested in space science and astronomy are welcome to join the Girl Scouts of Manitou Council Astronomy Club. Please contact Becky Gretz at firstname.lastname@example.org to get more information.
