Paws with a Passion
For Madison’s Gold Award, she created “Paws with a Passion,” a project focused on raising awareness about animal overpopulation in shelters and promoting fostering and adoption as solutions to help animals find safe, loving homes. Inspired by her passion for animal welfare, limited resources, and a lack of public awareness about the importance of fostering and adoption.
The goal of her project was to educate community members about the challenges faced by shelter animals, encourage more people to foster or adopt pets, and highlight the positive impact that animals can have on people's lives. Madison also thought to support organizations working to improve animal welfare and increase awareness of programs that pair service dogs with veterans.
To address these issues, Madison partnered with Dogs 2 Dog Tags and Paws Up Pet Rescue. She conducted extensive research on animal rescue, shelter overcrowding, fostering, adoption, and the physical and emotional effects that long-term shelter stays can have on animals. Madison then used this knowledge to educate community members at adoption and rescue events and answered questions about how individuals could become involved.
For Dogs 2 Dog Tags, Madison created an informational slideshow that is displayed in the organization's facility to educate visitors about its mission of training and pairing dogs with veterans experiencing PTSD, anxiety, and other challenges associated with military service. For Paws Up Pet Rescue, she designed an educational display board that explains the importance of fostering and adoption and showcased animals that are currently looking for forever homes. These materials continue to be used at community events to raise awareness and recruit volunteers, fosters, and adopters.
Throughout the project, Madison faced challenges with time management and balancing the extensive research required to accurately educate others. By setting goals, creating a schedule, and remaining committed to her mission, she successfully completed the research, developed educational materials, and participated in events that connected community members with rescue organizations and adoptable animals.
The project resulted in increased awareness of animal welfare issues and generated interests fostering and adoption opportunities. During the events, several animals received adoption inequities, and many of the dogs and cats Madison helped promote were eventually adopted into permanent homes. Her efforts also supported fundraising and outreach opportunities for local rescue organizations.
Madison demonstrated leadership, perseverance, problem solving, collaboration, and communication skills. She successfully created educational resources that will continue to inform and inspire community members long after the competition of her Gold Award!
