Troop 8001 from Cedarburg recently earned their Silver Award, the highest achievement Girl Scout Cadettes can earn, for their project "Manage Teen Anxiety."
As teens, dealing with stress and anxiety was an important issue to the troop. For the first part of their project, this group of Girl Scouts completed lots of research on mental wellness and ways to combat stress.
They learned about and practiced:
They also learned about the importance faith, friendships, and family can have on mental health and anxiety.
The second part of their project focused on making a difference for other teens.
The troop learned about anxiety stones - rocks and crystals aimed to help alleviate anxiety - in the research phase of their project. They wanted to collect and donate these to a local organization that helped them with their research so they could be handed out to teens and kids in need. These Girl Scouts designed cards with quotes and information about anxiety on them and attached a stone to each card. These were then donated to the organization. The troop also designed an affirmation card that can be passed out to all teens. They also donated a stack of these cards to the organization and included the digital flyer so more can be printed and utilized in the future.
Throughout the course of the project, the troop gained so many skills. But their biggest takeaway was that having feelings of anxiety is completely normal. They are better equipped to deal with these feelings now and can even help others.
