Senior Girl Scout Josie from Troop 8422 stepped outside of her comfort zone and explored the world of public safety through the CampHERO Destination Trip.
Designed for girls in grades 9-12, CampHERO gives participants a hands-on look at careers in emergency services. Josie chose to attend because she is interested in pursuing a career as a firefighter, police officer, or paramedic and wanted the opportunity to learn more about each field before making future career decisions.
Josie participated in a variety of real-world training experiences, including practicing CPR, cutting apart vehicles during rescue simulations, investigating mock crime scenes, and connecting with professional firefighters, EMTs, and police officers. She gained valuable insight into the skills, teamwork, and dedication required in public safety careers.
Of all the experiences CampHERO offered, Josie’s favorite was firefighter training. “I liked the firefighter training the most,” she shared.
Beyond the hands-on experiences, one of Josie’s favorite parts of CampHERO was being able to connect with other girls who shared similar interests and career choices. “It was nice to spend time with other girls who are also interested in these careers,” she said. “It was nice to see that girls can be in these careers too.”
“CampHero showed me that being in a job that requires a lot of physical and mental work can be stressful and scary at times. But having a team of friends that are supportive when times are hard can really make a difference in how your work and home life can be,” said Josie. “CampHero also showed me how close firefighters and police work together and inspired me to want to help people that are hurt or in need. It also made me want to be a part of a team that dedicates their lives to helping people.”
When asked what she would tell other Girl Scouts interested in destinations, she encouraged them to give it a try.
“It was a good opportunity to meet new people and see what it would actually be like to work in these careers,” she says
Through CampHERO, Josie not only explored future career possibilities but also gained confidence, built new friendships, and strengthened her desire to make a difference in her community.
